Dayfiction is a local band based in Richmond, VA. Experience post-performance dialogue in an interview with Dayfiction's Evan and Hannah below:
Paradoccs- So, how did you guys get to where you are now?
Evan- I was in a band prior to it. You were as well, Hannah, what was your band called?
Hannah- At first it was Rocket Vomit. Yeah, Those were like, all, first bands. Then my punk band was a two-piece, one of my best friends at the time. And we were called Scruffy.
Evan- Noah, he's not here right now. He played in a garage rock band called The Blair. Mateo I met at work. And then Jackson played in my last band and I called him back over when I wanted to start this thing.
Paradoccs- Cool, well, did any of you take lessons for singing, guitar, drums, etc?
Evan- I learned on YouTube. My dad taught me, like, three chords and then from there, I just went on YouTube. I took lessons, but a lot of them were based on recording more than anything.
Hannah- I actually think for me it is kind of on and off, like I took lessons for about a year, and it was fun, and then I kind of just thought I would rather go off on my own with the tools that I have.
Paradoccs- So then what sold it for you that this is what you want to do right now? Is there a thought that you had that was, like, yep, "this is it”?
Hannah- Honestly for me, it was just a matter of, I've been doing it for so long. It's become such a part of my identity, and it’s a part of all the passions that I pursued personally. It’s the effect you see in the community and the people you see, people coming out and stuff like that. I think it's a really big part. It's being able to just share your heart with other people.
Evan- Yeah, when I was recording stuff, like, alone and in my room, you know, you kind of want to play that stuff live.
Paradoccs- So music is almost a liaison to community for you?
Evan- Yeah it's like when you really love a certain sound or certain bands, you kind of want to create your own thing that expands on it.
Paradoccs- Awesome. Kind of a fun one, if you could pick out one medium to deliver music in for the rest of your life, would it be live music, vinyl, streaming platforms…?
Hannah- Oh, gosh. I perform the best, like, when it's just live in front of other people. Maybe it's also from personal experience of like, I'm not the greatest recording musician. Evan can definitely attest to this. Like, I get a red light, you know? I just freeze up. I think I would have to say live. Because I just love live music.
Evan- I started learning how to play everything and record stuff and that was where I have been my best self. It’s where I am most fun, but also, if you ask me right now after playing our live shows, yeah, this is the best part right here.
Paradoccs- That's got to be exhilarating. Yeah. Those are great answers. Last thing- so with Paradoccs, we usually do song reviews in three words for the first slide of our reviews. If you could come up with three words that describe how you hoped you performed today, what would they be?
Evan- I would hope it was…my gosh, it has to be one word.
Hannah- I would say atmosphere for sure. I would say… drony? A lot of really awesome bigger bands we look out for, one thing I’ve noticed is their atmosphere. That's something I really want to aspire for with Dayfiction.
Evan- Yeah if we had to sum all that up, I would say atmospheric, explosive, biblical.
