Zara Chantelle is an upcoming artist who recently released single "Happiness". Dive into this interview with Zara to learn more about her!
Paradoccs- So, we listened to “Happiness” and we love it, but we wanted to know a little bit more about what “Happiness” means to you.
Zara- So, I haven't been through anything like that myself. I'm in a loving relationship, but almost every single female friend I have has been through the same situation where they have a guy, they are treated badly and then the friend just stays and gets really low self-esteem and they really struggle. I'm the therapist friend, so I wanted a way to also cope with that, but also give them something that they can hear to reassure them that they're not the issue and that it's okay to leave if they need to.
Paradoccs- Okay. So it's like an anthem for your best friends and anyone who can relate to them?
Zara- Exactly.
Paradoccs- So it's always fun to figure out where people have been and where they're going, right? Where were you before you started all this?
Zara- I started in my eighth year, but then I got really bad stage fright. So I secretly did gigs and open mics in Adelaide with my dad's help. I was building up my confidence and my teachers really helped me be confident in my singing. Then I slowly started telling my friends about my gigs after about a year of doing them. From there, I started writing songs. And for my year 12 project, happiness was all my years’ work.
Paradoccs- Awesome, thank you. So if you could deliver music in one medium for the rest of your life, vinyl, live music, streaming platforms, what do you think it would be?
Zara- Definitely live music.
Paradoccs- Yeah?
Zara- I love the connection with the audience and the way that you can see them physically relate to it or be like, “oh, that's a really cool part”. It's way more rewarding.
Paradoccs- I guess going off of that question, what are some of the best venues that you've performed at that were your favorite?
Zara- In Australia, we have this football, but it's shaped like an oval, and we call it footy. And there's a thing called “Gatheround” where everyone from all over Australia comes to Adelaide to celebrate football and all the football teams come to Adelaide and play. And we were the top eight to play there on a big festival stage in front of 3,000 people. So that was about two months ago, I think. That was really, really awesome. And another place I played was a place called Chalk Hill Wines. It's a winery and a really famous team, the Adelaide Thunderbirds, came there to celebrate their win. So they started singing songs with me there, which was pretty awesome.
Paradoccs- That's a great achievement, both of those- so how did you overcome your stage fright then?
Zara- I mean, I still get stage fright. It's just about managing it and making sure your breathing's okay when you sing. Performing a lot is how I manage that. So I do like three gigs or three performances a weekend to keep performing because I've noticed that if I don't perform for a while and then I'm back at it, I get nervous again. So I just keep going and keep pushing.
Paradoccs- At Paradoccs, we do, have you noticed we do three word reviews for our songs?
Zara- Yeah.
Paradoccs- So if you could pick three words to describe your new single “Happiness” what would you choose?
Zara- Empowering, reassuring, sadness.
