Violet Whimsey’s “sally” stretches her outstanding vocal lament with the bright notes of a vague protest. She details and repeats the same situation for emphasis as “sally” wishes to be heard. With the ring of a mellow electric guitar, Whimsey’s new single is a timely grievance veiled by hopeful melodies and major chords. The somber chorus starts with “rat race” moving on to “come on Sally, Sally only” who only “knew four words”. This may present an ambiguity that’s both politically and socially charged. We love artists that tell their truth, and Whimsey communicates a nostalgic, selective sense of longing that uses youth to symbolize unfairness in the past and present- on the playground and in society. Violet offers clear vocals atop eager strings and a lulling drum pattern to set the scene for Sally’s story. Overall, Whimsey communicates an unwavering, real ache with her signature vocals and pop-ballad delivery. Our interpretation could be mistaken, but our love for the song is unquestionable.

Violet Whimsey is a multi-genre artist that covers soft pop ballads all the way through light punk rock. She has a knack for extracting raw emotion from listeners with her tear-tugging lyrics and balances soundscapes. Her vocal ranges from bleeding cries to sassy statements. She released her first single “Loving You (Was Killing Me)” in 2020, her first album “Love, Love” in 2024, and her new single “sally” this month. Her song “How Bout We” is on The Great Big Playlist on Spotify, and “All The Love Songs” is Whimsey’s top song on the app.
